It’s a dream that one day we will share a plant-based planet, but for now, I’d like to share a bunch of stuff with you that might help that dream become a reality.
Whether you’re a hard-core, lifelong vegan, a meatless Monday fan, or a Veganuary virgin, I hope this substack newsletter provides some inspo, fresh ideas and food for thought.
Each edition will include a dive into a specific food (think: hummous, aubergines, potatoes, carrots…), a dive into a dish and/or cuisine ( ‘fish’ and chips, dal, Vietnamese, Egyptian…) and step-by-step recipes I’ve been playing with lately.
Most of the recipes I enjoy - after having lived in the Middle East for close to 20 years - are super easy, packed with flavour and as healthy as can be. I’ll be sharing some of my favourites, old and new - and welcome requests for a recipe you can’t find or fancy veganising.
Each edition will also include a few thoughts, campaigns and favourite posts of the week for anyone interested in cooking and eating a cruelty-free, healthy, plant-based, sustainable diet.
A bit about me
I’m Will, (above, gnawing on a giant organic radish) a hungry man obsessed with eating well, eating right and helping save the planet through small actions each and every day. I hope this substack encourages more people to go plant-based - for the animals, the planet and your own health.
Growing up, I saw my sisters eating vegetarian food and used to eat my own dinner and then try theirs, too!
Fast forward to university, and the mad cow disease scare in the UK, and I switched to being pescatarian, then vegetarian, and now I’m wholly plant-based, for about the last six years. I say ‘about’ because there was no specific ‘epihany’ moment for me - it was simply a case of acquiring more and more knowledge of animal farming practices and our broken food systems - to a point where I realised I no longer wanted to eat all this nasty stuff any more. And I prefer the term ‘plant-based’ for the simple reason that mentioning veganism enrages seemingly normal, rational people. :-)
I’m a writer - journalist, copywriter, PR person, and I have done a lot of food writing and reviewing. I’ve met some top chefs, and had the privilege of eating in amazing restaurants all over the world, from Mongolia to Manhattan.
My partner and I aim to live sustainably, with compassion, and take time to learn new things every day - whether it’s a new Netflix documentary, an article or a chat with friends.
